''Welcome to the territory of Johan Santana,'' reads a huge sign on a baseball field wall in an Andean town. |
This town is remote and its elevation is 6,400 feet above sea level in southwestern Venezuela. His wicked curveball would not work that well there compared to pitching in Citi Field in New York. Santana is a powerful ace in the Met’s pitching rotation and one of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues. To say he is a legend in his hometown would be an understatement. The town’s fire engine promoted this young man’s image by posting a banner that said: “Cy Young 2006, 2004” written on it. His image precedes him; it is safe to say this. The town’s 46,000 citizens boast about he used to help his uncle sell bread out of the back of the station wagon. The station wagon was dubbed La Conga. They also like to disseminate the tale when Santana was sent home from his first baseball practice for dressing in shorts like he was playing soccer or basketball.
''I'm the same man I was before Johan got famous -- I still enjoy hanging out with my friends and playing ball,'' Jesus said smoothly in Spanish. ''Are we living better now than before? Of course. But we have remained humble and continue to live in the same house.''
Tovar is stationed in a modest valley cloaked by dark green mountains. The fresh air is felt during every breath. This is a mighty agriculture player in the state of Merida. The coffee here is world class. The business area is ripe and the streets are often bustling with people and joy. But things may be a little different since Hugo Chavez has had a few years to devastate the country’s economy and image. Chavez has even had the Spanish telling him to shut up. Tovar has bromeliads growing on electric wire and cows munching on grass in random sections of the town will always remind the visitor this is not the big city.
