Where Is Uruguay ?

Uruguay also called ‘Republica Oriental del Uruguay’ is a small country located in the southeastern part of South America on the coastline of Atlantic Ocean.

It is a home to nearly 3.4 million people and nearly half of the population of this country lives in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo. Nearly 88 percent of the population of Uruguay is European decedents.Brazil lies to the north of the nation, Uruguay River to the west, Estuary of Rio de la Plata to the southwest, the South Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and Argentina to the South of Uruguay. This is the second smallest country in the continent of South America and is little larger than Suriname.

Colonia del Sacramento is one of the oldest settlements that was found by the Portuguese somewhere in 1680. But the capital city of Uruguay, Montevideo was a Spanish establishment and was considered a centre for military base. The country won its independence in 1825-28 where it had to fight against the Spanish colonial powers, Brazil and Argentina. The constitutional democracy is a peace loving country and people here has a laid back attitude with peace loving nature.

Compared to other South American Countries, Uruguay has less crime rate. The economy of the country is largely based on agriculture and also it is the least corrupt country in Latin America with its labor and political conditions being freest on the entire South America Continent. The small country in the Southeaster part of the large continent is an economically developed nation and has a good GDP that puts it in the rank of 47 for having highest quality of life.

The area of the country is just 176,214 km2 and the landscape features are mostly rolling plains and low hill ranges with fertile coastal lowland.
