There is little consistency in the weather of Peru, and conditions vary dramatically from region to region. |
Of course this might be expected in a country which has such a diverse array of landscapes. The seasons are, of course, opposite to those in the northern hemisphere meaning that summer runs from December to February and winter from July to September.
In the mountainous highlands which include the city of Cusco the dry season runs from April to October and sees temperatures soar into the seventies during the day, while dropping to almost freezing at night. During the wet season, temperatures remain mild, with little drop in temperature during the night. Rain in this area tends to come in the late afternoon, with mornings generally dry.
The coastal area of Peru, which includes both Lima and Arequipa, are perfect for sitting on the beach and building that tan. During the summer (Dec- April) , temperature here range between 70-80, and there is virtually no rain during this period. During the winter period though the temperature drops, making it impossible to enjoy a swim in the sea, in fact “blankets all round” is often a call heard in Lima during this time of year.
In the jungle regions of Peru, the temperatures remain relatively consistent at between 60 and 75 for most of the year. During the rainy period it should be noted, the mosquitoes proliferate, catching the unprepared tourist unawares, and the trails through the jungle tend to turn to small rivers and streams.
