The capital Lima is obviously the largest of these cities, but by no means the most interesting. Lima is a bustling metropolis, with a modern business district, sprawling shanty towns, and a promenades in its seaside towns which feel almost give it the feel of the French Riviera.

The city boasts exquisite colonial remnants such as the Monastery of San Francisco, the Cathedral of Lima and the Torre Tagle Palace which are all perfect examples of the Spanish baroque style. One of the main attractions for visitors in the city is the Church tour, which encapsulates the heart and could of what Lima has to offer.

Cusco, or in its Quechua translation “navel of the world , is an extraordinary city which has been a focus of the region for centuries. Its beautiful streets are a residual memory of a long gone era, but the city remains a hubbub of international communication, with languages varying from Spanish to Hebrew being heard regularly in its café’s and churches. It is also the main departure point on the Inca trail, leading up to the historic Peruvian city, the angel in the clouds, Machu Picchu.

In southern Peru sits its second city, Arequipa. It gained its nickname, La Ciudad Blanca - The White City, due to the use of sillar, the shining white volcanic rock, in its construction. It is surrounded by three volcanoes, Misti, Chachani, and PichuPichu, which are visible throughout the city, and are a massive attraction for visitors to the city.
