If you were to walk into a restaurant in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay, it is likely that you would be a clueless as I about what to eat. |
Paraguayan food has not reached pinnacles of culinary epicurism that say Thai or French food has, however, don’t be fooled, Paraguay has some trick up its sleeves.
Mbeyú
This delicious omelet, which is cooked using cassava starch and Peruvian cheese has to be tasted to be believed. One of the most popular dishes in Paraguay, this is a must for any newcomer to Paraguayan food. Based on the traditional European omelet this dish is made uniquely Paraguayan through use of corn and the exquisite Quesú paraguái cheese.
Mandiocaú
You could not easily talk about Paraguayan food without mentioning Mandiaoca. Ever present at the dinner table, yucca , as it is often called, is a potato like tuber which is eaten throughout South America. Unlike other countries, where they tend to fry it, Paraguayans tend to eat their yucca boiled, and it is anything but yucky.
Mateú
Finally, no event in Paraguay is classed as successful without mate, an invigorating and stimulating drink which is made from the leaves of the yerba mate plant. Mate is served in both hot and cold varieties and the drinking of mate is almost a ritualistic event in any Paraguayan household. The drink is consumed through a metal straw and is said by drinkers to be health tonic with fantastic medicinal properties.
