The first stop for any traveler to Paraguay is likely to be Asucion, the capital city. This beautiful colonial city, founded by Juan de Salazar y Espinosa in 1541, is resplendent with wide plaza’s and stunning colonial architecture. One place in the capital which should not be missed is the Plaza de los Héroes which is famous for its pink dome that overlooks the city. Other sites include the Casa Viola, The Museo de Bellas Artes, and the Casa de la Independencia, where revolutionaries met in 1811 to plan the nations independence struggle.
Only once you leave the capital however to you get a real sense for the true beauty of the country. Striding around Cerro Cora National Park you find yourself in one of the most untouched areas in the world, home to a diverse collection of some of the world’s most endangered species. Within the park are the beautiful pre-Columbian caves , where you can get a taste of a Paraguay lost in the mists of time.
Also if you are staying in Asuncion, it’s definitely worth a trip to the Iquazu falls on he Brazilian Argentinean border. This immense wonder of nature is taller than the Niagara Falls and twice as wide with 273 cascades located across 2 miles of waterfall.
Finally, no trip to Paraguay would be complete without a visit to the untouched and beautiful Grand Chaco. It is widely considered to be the last unexplored wilderness in South America. The adventurous traveler can ride on horseback or by boat through the beautiful forests and swamps, observing wildlife and landscapes, untouched by the modern world.
