Most people in the country speak both languages and authors such as Augusto Roa Bastos have used both in their writing to accurately portray real lift in this multilingual nation.

Within the school system, both languages are given now an equal footing, with textbooks being written, half in Spanish, and half in Guarani. It should be noted however, those speakers of Guarani who do not speak Spanish do not have as many opportunities as Spanish speakers do. It should be remembered that Paraguay is one of the few countries in the region where more people speak an indigeonous langauge than speak the colonial language.

As the first county to make an indigenous language on of it’s official languages, Paraguay is leading the way in indigenous language rights.  In 1992 ,Guaraní was specified within the constitution as an official language, and it became an official language of instruction from 1996 onwards. The country also uses other indigenous languages including the Toba-Maskoy language, Mataco Mataguayo, Zamuco and Guaicurú.

In addition to the official and native languages there are also a number of other languages spoken in the country, foremost is Portuguese which is used in the large immigrant Brazilian community which resides in the country. Within the substantial Mennonite community, a variant of German is still used for day to day life, and other communities still regularly use their native tongue living in Paraguay.
