The traditions in Guyana are a blend of Amerindian, Chinese, African, French, Indian, Caribbean, Dutch, American, British and Portuguese. |
Traditions and customs of different countries are reflected in the festivals that are celebrated in this country. Regardless of the fact that all the festivals have different origins, all the festivals have gained utmost significance amongst the people. Although, a variety of religions are practiced; however the dominant ones have always been Hinduism, Christianity, Muslim, and Islam. A land of different cultures, Guyana celebrates a variety of festivals having their respective significance in different countries.
Phagwah- Observed in the month of May, Phagwah is holiday according to Hindu calendar. It is celebrated as victory of good over evil. Hindu people usually wear white and throw harmless liquor called abeer. Perfume, powder and water are thrown on neighbors, friends and family by both Hindus and on-Hindus.
Mashramani- It is a festival that is usually celebrated on 23rd February in the commemoration of “Birth of Republic”. The Republic Day here is recognized as the most beautiful and colorful amongst all festivals. Masquerade bands, fancy dress competitions, street performances and float masquerades are common during this festival.
Eid-Ul-Azha: during this festival, animals are sacrificed and the meat is distributed amongst kinsfolk and poor.
Easter: It is a Christian festival wherein hot crossbuns are eaten by people. During this time, most of the families attend services in Church. The festive season comes to an end on Easter Monday. People celebrate this festival by flying kites.
Christmas: It is another important festival which is celebrated with pomp and show like Mashramani.
