Guyana History

It is evident from the history of Guyana that it was Warrau tribe of Guyana which ruled the territory before the arrival of European people.

Later on it was Dutch people who settled in the region of Guyana around Essequibo River. England and France also influenced the region of Guinea. Beginning of 17 century till early 19 century, the possessions changed hands frequently till British Guinea was established in 1831. In 1834 there was abolishment of slavery and gold discovery in 1879. This paved the way for British expansion leading to Venezuela boundary dispute.

Noticeable progress occurred after World War II and Cheddi Jagan became the leader of PPP in 1953 after winning the elections and formed the Government. PPP split and Burnham formed PNC. There were many ups and downs with much of political unrest. US Central Intelligence Agency was said to be involved. It is thought to be at initiative of Kennedy administration.

Burnham became Head of coalition Government in 1964.The coalition was formed by PNC and UF. There were communal riots in 1960s, but country stabilized in 1970s.

The year of 1970 saw this place become a republic. Territorial clashes and disputes with Venezuela and Suriname became a matter of concern. Venezuela claimed 60% of the territory. Large numbers of suicides were committed in 1978 by Americans.  Under a new constitution, Burnham became the President in 1980. 

Burnham died in 1985 and Desmond Hoyte became the successor. He initiated few liberalization programs and foreign aid and investments were invited by the Government. Opposition parties invited fresh elections in late 1980s due to political unrest. Cheddi Jagan of PPP became the President in 1992.The place progressed under his leadership. He died in March 1997 and in Dec 1997 his wife became the President and resigned in 1999.PPP came to power in 2001.Natural calamities created havoc in Guyana in 2005.
