Facts About Guyana

The word ‘Guyana’ means “Land of many waters” which is derived from Amerindian language.

Officially, the country of Guyana was called as Co-Operative Republic of Guyana. The single state of Commonwealth of Nations, this place is based in north eastern coast of Southern America. It is bordered by Surinam in the southeast, Venezuela in the west and by Brazil in the south. Besides this, it is also enclosed by the Atlantic Ocean towards east and north.

The country is spanned over the area of 83,000 square miles or 214,970 square kilometers which is near about the combined size of Scotland, England and Wales.  The capital city of this place, Georgetown is also situated over the Atlantic Ocean which is close to the mouth of River Demerara. Being one of the largest countries of Caribbean Community, Guyana comprises of 80% of the rain forests including savannahs, coastal plain and inland mountains. The major rivers of this place are Essequibo, Berbice, Corentyne and Demerara. Kaieteur Falls, 741 meters high is the highest drop waterfall of this place.

Most often, it is called as “Land of Six peoples” because of its diversity of cultures that includes Amerindians, Portuguese, Chinese, Africans, Indians and Europeans. The total populace of the country is approximately 7, 00,000 amongst with highest percentage of people are living on coast.

Apart from this, the officially used languages are English, Creole and other Amerindian languages. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam are the religions which are practiced in this country. Guyana Dollar is the official currency used here. Last but not the least; it is the major rum producer in the world with productions of rice, sugar, diamonds and gold.
