He speaks Spanish, French, Quechua, and English. Mr. Correa received has an Economics degree from the Universidad Católica Santiago de Guayaquil. In 1991, he received his Master of Arts in Economics from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. Mr. Correa received a Master of Science and a PhD in Economics at the University of Illinois in 1999 and 2001 respectively.

Officially declared President in December 2006, Mr. Correa assumed his duties in January 2007. During the run up to elections, Mr. Correa presented himself as a fresh face on the country’s political scene. Earlier in 2005, Mr. Correa had served the finance minister for a brief period.

In April 2009 Mr Correa was re-elected for a second term, the first time in 30 years that Ecuador re-elected a President. He took 52 per cent of the vote, beating seven other candidates in the fray. His party, however, failed to get the majority, though it won the largest legislative block in the National Assembly. Mr. Correa took the oath on 10 August 2009, on the occasion of Ecuador's bicentennial. He promised to continue his “socialist revolution”.

Mr. Correa’s high-profile decisions include his continuous refusal to renew the lease on airbases used by US forces to curb narcotics activities. In February 2009 Ecuador expelled two US diplomats, accusing them of interfering with Ecuador’s internal affairs. The US, however, refuted the charges.
