The two prevalent weather types in Ecuador are wet and dry. But these vary greatly depending on the altitude, season and geography of the area to be visited. |
January to April is largely the rainy season in the “coasta” regions with lots of paddy being grown, a number of birds and insects on display, weekly markets selling exotic fruit and rivers overflowing; from May onwards towards June-July the warm, dry weather begins; and August to December is when the coast is at its driest with lots to do such as trekking, climbing, beach hopping, and mango picking!
The mainland coastal areas and the Galapagos Islands are under the influence of the ocean currents and are mainly hot and sunny between December and May. On the other hand, in the highlands, dry and windy weather is prevalent from June to September and January to Mrach has splendid sunshine filled days with a smattering of afternoon rain. The Amazon rainforest oscillates between rain and heat, keeping it humid at all times with average temperatures at 32º C in the day and 20º C in the night. But January to May is the least wet in this section.
In the central valley the temperatures and weather patterns mimic those of spring. Cities in the highlands have temperatures of 50*F to 70*F, while coastal cities vary from 60*F to 80*F in the day. The Galapagos Islands are warm and sunny from December to May with a drop in temperature from June to November. So it can be safely said that in Ecuador you can find sunshine, rain and snow at any given point throughout the year!
