The most important of early societies and cultures of Ecuador developed not so much from west of Brazil, but from along the coast. The first people and culture of Ecuador was the Valdivia. |
They are still known for their clay and mud figurines which lay emphasis on fertility goddesses, pregnancy and childbirth. The Inca Empire came post the Valdivia in the early 15th century and was mainly around Cuzco in Peru. But this was not to be as at the time of Inca Pachacuti, his desire for widespread rule, policies of expansion took shape and began to be executed. He began the creation of the Incan Empire as we know it today. The son he fathered in turn had two sons, one of whom was Atahualpa who grew up in what is today’s Quito. Atahualpa too expanded the Empire but was to see his death at the hands of the Spanish invaders, mainly one named Pizzaro who came in 1532.
Pizzaro’s entry saw the rapid unraveling of the Incan Empire who put the fear of god into the natives due to his horseback riding, armour-wearing, and gunfire wielding army. Pizzaro finally killed Atahualpa for unjust reasons and took over. Despite their short reign, the Incan culture continues to play a very important role in the Ecuadorian lifestyle. Quichua (then Quecha) is still spoken today, and the complex road systems laid down by the Incans are still usable today. The Spanish took over form 1535, and successfully ruled Ecuador. Their time saw agriculture and art flourish with lots of churches and monasteries built, which have all resulted in the blend of Spansih and Indian art that is still prevalent today.
Ecuador was eventually liberated by the Venenzuelan Simon Bolivar, but he tried to create a unified South America. This only lasted eight years, and eventually Ecuador saw freedom in 1830.
