Ecuadorians love a good party! And their strong Catholic roots play a huge part in their celebrations and festivities. |
The Carnaval is the pre-party before the 40-days of abstinence before Semana Santa (Easter Week). This is a time for unmitigated revellery and wild partying with parades and water fights and a fruit and flower parade in the city of Ambato.
Easter and Holy Week is a week-long celebration with religious processions, shops kept closed and tightly packed beaches. In the Andean Highlands, the Mama Negra is celebrated with great pomp; this pagan celebration has its roots in the Spanish time with men dressing up as black women.
Other festivals are the Inti Raymi (June) and Yamor (September), with both incorporating indigenous rituals mixed with Catholic beliefs. Amongst the other popular celebrations is Founder’s Day in July in Guayaquil where the city celebrates for two whole days marking their liberator Simon Bolivar’s birthday and the founding of their city. August 10th is Quito Independence Day, and in November All Soul’s Day sees families paying obeisance to the dead by dancing, eating, drinking to celebrate the lives of those that have gone on. 6th of December is Founder’s Day (Fiestas de Quito) which is marked by bull fights, parades, street dancers, open-air party buses, music, dancing and drinking.
This day sets the tone for the month of December with the party in full-swing from the 24th onwards, and the last day of the year is marked by the symbolic burning of human figurines, and partying in the streets.
