The Republic of Ecuador can be visited throughout the year. With its diverse geography, and a variety of places of interest, there is no dearth of excitement in this fascinating region. |
From the Amazon jungles, the complex flora and fauna, the Amazon Basin, the Andean Volcanoes, the picturesque beaches, to the Galapagos Islands, a tropical climate prevails all year round with almost constant sunshine due to being located on the equator. The variety in climate is determined largely by the changes in altitude – a tropical climate with heavy rains is characteristic of the Pacific coastal area, the Oriente sees a lot of rain, in the Andean highlands it’s mainly dry and temperate whilst the Amazon Basin mimics the climate of the rainforests on the eastern side of the mountains.
While there are optimum visiting seasons that are different for each region, Ecuador can be a pleasure all year through. The months from August to December and then through to March are the driest in the Oriente, and that’s when most tourists flock here. The highland season is June to September, while the Galapagos Islands are perfect to visit at any time – unless you get seasick, then avoid the months July to September as the sea can be choppy and unfriendly. The Ecuador coast is a bit of a paradox as it rains from January to May but only late in the afternoon, and this oddly is the best beach months with sunny weather prevalent.
June to December, on the other hand though dry, tend to be cooler, misty and overcast. Of course tourist season is also determined by the holiday periods of North America and Europe, and these months are when accommodation is tight, and the rates very high. Ditto for if your visit coincides with a festival or celebration.
