Though this country has no clear connection to the al-Qaeda’s pattern of world terrorism, the country’s weak central government, strong guerrillas, paramilitary groups and the rich drug lords are responsible for making the country a haven for native terrorist groups which carry out extortion

Terrorism as well as threat of terrorists attack was the primary cause of concern to the U.S.A much before the attacks of September 11. Though Colombia is a formal democratic nation, there is violence as well as corruption which are fueled by drug trade. There has been permeation of illegal profits at every part of the armed conflict to be found in Colombia – guerrilla groups, drug traffickers, the police and the military as well as the paramilitary forces. U.S.A pours approximately half a billion dollars every year for military aid into the country for strengthening the delicate socio-political system of the country.

The three main terrorist organizations - United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), National Liberation Army (ELN), the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), are instrumental for several murders and kidnapping across the country over the years.

An antiterrorist law had been enacted in Colombia by the 2003 yearend. According to this law, the military forces can arrest people till 36 hours, may search homes, and also spy on the private interactions even without any judicial oversight and legal warrant. Military forces will also have access to the new registry which will contain confidential information on the Colombians.
