There are several languages spoken widely in Colombia, located in South America. Many of the languages are in use while some are no longer spoken as it used to be in the bygone era. |
Spanish is supposed to be the official language that is spoken in Colombia. The Spanish that is spoken in this country bears some semblance to the Spanish which is spoken in Spain. Other commonly spoken languages are Wayuu, Spanish, Paez, Romani, Embera. Achagua is another important language spoken in Colombia, which belongs to the Maipurean Arawakan language group. Sign languages that are used in Colombia include the Colombian numerals, Providence Island Sign Language and the Columbian Sign Language.
The languages spoken by the ethnic groups in Colombia are accepted constitutionally as official languages in the respective districts. More than 60 native languages are spoken nowadays in Colombia. These are San Andrés-Providencia Creole, Ticuna, Paezan languages, Kuna, Minica Huitoto, Arawakan languages, Cocama-Cocamilla, Cuiba, Guahibo, etc.

Speaking of slang is quite common in paisa region and in the Medellin community, and it is called “Parlache”. Although many scholars describe this type of language as disgusting or unclassifiable, it certainly is a step forward in lingual development having a great deal of sociological importance.
There are about 21 languages in Colombia which are extinct now. Some of the extinct languages include Barbacoas, Andaqui, Omejes, Chipiajes,Runa, Ponares, Anserma, Cauca and Natagaimas.
