During the 19th century, Colombia was ruled by Spain. It was in 1499 that the Spanish came to this territory and initiated an era of colonization and conquests. On August 7, 1819, the Colombian army had to wage the last war at Boyaca's bridge in which they won over the Spanish army. The Colombian people put up a brave front under the leadership of Simon Bolivar despite the fact that they had only simple weapons like knives, spades and lances while the Spanish army was equipped with guns, cannons, rifles, soldiers and horses.

In Colombia, two independence days are celebrated separately. The first one falls on the 20th of July to commemorate the first attempt to get freedom from Spain in the year 1810. The second day is on August 7th. This was the day in 1819 that Simon Bolivar’s army achieved the crucial victory over the Spanish army in Boyaca.

Both the days are celebrated as national holidays. Army parades take place in the major cities and the people place flags of Colombia on the house windows and their apartments. Also the prominent artists of the nation put up performances in the main cities displaying Colombia’s varied cultural expressions. Colombian embassies throughout the world also organize events for helping the migrants to remember and celebrate their Independence Day.
