Santiago is the capital city of Chile. It is also the largest city, both in terms of population (over 5 million) and area (1.400 square kilometers), of Chile. |
Founded on 12th February, 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish Conquistador, Santiago is located in Chile’s central valley, close to the base of the Andean Mountains. It was earlier known by the name of Santiago del Nuevo Extremo. Located at a height of 543 meters above mean sea level, Santiago is one of the most developed South American cities. From the time it was founded, Santiago has been demolished and reconstructed many times; first when it was destroyed by the Araucanians and then by the 2 earthquakes that hit it in the year 1730 and 1647.
Santiago occupies a total area of 1,400 sq. km with 40 km across east to west and 35 km from south to north. The main reason for it being the largest city is the inclusion of the several small satellite districts which at first were situated at its periphery. Because of this amalgamation, it is also referred to as the Greater Santiago.
The climate of the city is of the mild Mediterranean type. The summers are hot and dry occurring from November to March. The average temperature in summer is about 22 degrees Celsius. The winters occur from March to August and are relatively more humid. The average temperature is about 9 degrees Celsius in winter with the maximum being 15 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is about 360 mm and occurs mainly during the cooler months.
