Holidays Celebrated In Chile

Holidays in Chile are directly connected to its tradition, culture and celebration. On holidays the whole of Chile is in festive mood and one gets to see a unique amalgamation of all the cultures and traditions.

The people pay their respect and tribute to those who contributed and sacrificed their lives for the country. They remember the glorious past and history of Chile and at the same time celebrate the present and hope and pray for a better and happy future. During festivals the whole country acquires new attire; the citizens express their joy and happiness by carrying out carnivals and processions.

Following is a list of annual public holidays in Chile. Majority of them are based on Christian celebrations.

1st January (New Year’s Day): In the past it was celebrated as the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, but nowadays it is celebrated as the start of a new year.

Good Friday and Holy Saturday: These are traditional Catholic holidays which are part of the Holy week.

st May (Labor Day): Like most of the countries around the world, Labor Day in Chile is celebrated to appreciate the social and economic achievements of workers.

21st May (Navy Day): It pays tribute to the naval combat of Iquique in the Saltpeter War.

29th June (Saint Peter and Saint Paul): It is a Catholic feast to commemorate the martyrdom of these saints.

16th July (Virgen Del Carmen): It is a traditional catholic feast.

15th August (Assumption of Mary): Christian holiday recalling the May’s journey to Heaven.

18th September (Independence Day)

19th September (Army Day): This day is used to pay tribute to the armed forces of Chile.

12th October (Columbus Day): Celebrates the day when Columbus reached Americas.

31st October (Reformation Day)

1st November (All Saints Day)

8th December (Immaculate Conception): Christian holiday recalling the Virgin Mary.

25th December (Christmas Day)
