Chile Independence Day

People of Chile celebrate 18th of September as the Independence Day. It’s a great occasion for all the Chileans to come together to celebrate their country’s rich customs and the independence.

It is one of the most important occasions of the country and is celebrated on a very large scale.Although Chile got its complete independence in the year 1818 it continues to celebrate its independence from the year 1810. The Dieciocho, the Chile’s independence is made up of two words “diez” and “ocho”, the diez means 10 and the word ocho represents eight, which means that the independence is being celebrated from the year 1810, when Chile started their war of independence against the Spaniards. 

The independence celebrations are continued for almost a month. The month of September is called Mes de la Patria, meaning of which is month of the nation. The celebration starts from the 1st of September. All kinds of patriotic activities are conducted during the initial days. The main celebration is celebrated during the five days around the September 18th, generally from September 16th to 20th. During these five days the whole country is lit up. People of Chile celebrate this occasion with great joy and happiness.

People enjoy various cultural events conducted during these days. Various parades are conducted; these parades include the traditional cowboys of Chile, various singing and dancing events. Also events are conducted which showcase the Chilean history, to inculcate the feeling of national pride among the people of Chile. People enjoy the festival by kite flying, hanging out with friends and family, tasting variety of Chilean delicacies and drinking. Also dance competitions held during the celebrations where the la cueca can be witnessed, it is the national dance of Chile.
