Rio de Janeiro’s carnival is perhaps one of the most celebrated events in the world. It attracts millions of visitors from all over the globe. The city is aptly known as the carnival capital of the world.

         The Rio carnival has been officially declared the largest organized event in the world. More than 500 thousand tourists alone attend the event.

The Rio carnival is typically celebrated for 4 days, and these days fall 40 days before Easter every year. It starts on a Saturday and ends on a Wednesday. The carnival was mainly celebrated to give up the pleasures of flesh, and is considered quite profane in display. The carnival usually takes place in February, which happens to be the hottest time in the Southern Hemisphere. Rio is at the peak of summer during this time.
 

The real culture of Brazil is exhibited through the carnival along with entertaining millions around the world. During the carnival, several Brazilians participate in the dance, sing and party all night. Several parties take place and a lot of indulgence is witnessed. People who participate in the parade prepare for it all through the year. The best participant in the parade is awarded at the end. People make huge effigies and display carts in preparation of the event. For some people, the carnival is not just a celebration but also their living.

The carnival officially begins by the crowning of the Fat King or King Momo. This figure is presented with using a silver and gold key by the mayor of the city.
