However, the fight for independence in Brazil was far from being violent, and has been through several transitions in history.Since the late 18th century, there was an underlying current or desperation in the people to gain their independence. The Portuguese ruled Brazil from 1788 to 1798. However, most Brazilians were said to have been comfortable during the rule and never revolted for independence. The strife was much less and least noticed in this country compared to Spanish America.

It was in the middle of the 18th century that the Pombaline reforms and its decision to transfer products to the overseas possessions irked and caused inconvenience to several Brazilians.

Brazil, under Portugal, was not in a very bad shape, even though if not in a good state. The Brazilian born nationals were allowed equal education along with the Portuguese, and also held respectable positions in the government. Some Brazilians also held high end administrative positions in the government. There was no commercial monopoly and everyone was allowed to be financially independent. The Brazilians and the Portuguese had common values in the economy of the country. However, the country’s upper class had a deep interest in forming their republic government.

Brazil finally became a Republic on November 15, 1889. The Portuguese governor was deposed by a military coup in Brazil, and the leader who headed the coup, Deodoro da Fonseca, became the first Brazilian President.
