The history of Canada is a very interesting one. Canada and the United States share several geographic features, and were nearly identical in their pasts. However, as and when Canada was formed is still very unclear, and no one knows the exact chain of events that led to the formation of the country. |
Canada is an independent nation today but its history is actually intertwined with America’s history. Canada achieved its independence through gradual changes made to the Constitution. Most people in Canada believe that Canada was discovered by the seafarers known as Vikings. There are several epic stories written about this event, and have been in existent since 985 AD. It is believed that Norse seamen who were sailing from Iceland to Greenland were blown to the land of Canada. Soon enough, Norse colonists started settling in the deeply forested lands of Canada.
In 1000 AD, the first European came to Canada and his name was Leif Ericson. After that, the transition of Canada started gradually to what it is today. The Vikings had established a colony known as Vinland, and the discoveries of the Vikings have been documented. However, some historians dispute this. Around the 14th or 15th century, the Greenland vanished as a colony but this could be because by then the Vikings may have given up on their adventurous lives. There are evidences which show that the Vikings reached until the Hudson exploring the area, and they even found the Great Lakes region.
Whether the Vikings founded Canada or not is still an argument. However, the recent history of Canada includes the French rule, and the British rule in the later years. The country still has a very dominant French population because of its French past.
