Religion is not something separate and apart from ordinary life. It is life -- life of every kind viewed from the standpoint of meaning and purpose: |
life lived in the fuller awareness of its human quality and spiritual significance. Yemen has mainly people from some religions but welcomes all the other ones as well.Virtually, all citizens of Yemen are Muslims. They either belong to the Zaydi order of Shia Islam or to the Shafi’i order of Sunni Islam. The ratio is almost 1:1. The other religions apart from Islam that are prevalent in Yemen are Christianity, Jewish and Hinduism. There are 3000 Christians throughout the country and most of them are refugees or foreign residents. These mainly constitute the religions in Yemen. s
Jews are the oldest religious minority which is non-Muslim. There are less that 400 Jews who stay in the northern part of the country, primarily in Amran Governorate. There are close to 40 Hindus who live in Aden. Aden has 3 Roman Catholic churches and one Anglican; it also has one Temple for Hindus. Though there is no law that protects the right to freedom or religion, neither the constitution supports that but there are few Government policies that contributed to the freedom of practice of religion.
The constitution states that Islam is the state religion. There are few restrictions in terms of religion. Though everyone is free to practice religion as per their knowledge and belief but the Government prohibits conversion from Islam and the proselytization of Muslims.
