The United Arab Emirates was formerly known as Trucial States/Trucial Oman. This was because of the truce that happened between the Trucial states and The United Kingdom. |
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven states which are also called the emirates. It was formed in 1971 by the Trucial States after getting freedom from Britain. It is situated in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia on the Persian Gulf bordering Saudi Arabia and Oman. As mentioned the UAE is the federation of seven states termed Emirates which are 1) Dubai. Dubai is situated in the south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. It is the largest state of the UAE and a major tourist attraction. It has the largest population among all the seven emirates.
2) Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is situated on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. Also it is the capital state and the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi being the second largest city and the capital of the UAE contains 40% of the total population of the country and it is the 26th most expensive city in the whole world. 3) Sharjah-Sharjah is the third largest Emirate of the UAE. This state makes up to 2600 sq km and has a population of over 800,000. History says that it was one of the wealthiest towns in the region. 4) Ajman, 5) Umm al-Quwain, 6)Ras al-Khaimah and 7) Fujairah. It is known that Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to possess veto power over national matters.
