Saudi Arabia is predominantly Moslem and many people ask about women’s role in Saudi Arabia. |
Under the Sharia Law, Saudi Arabian women may be considered a bit limited as compared to their western counterparts. This article entitled “Women: Role in Saudi Arabia” will try to shed some light into this widely talked about topic. Many Saudi Arabian women feel that their tradition and their culture hold them back. This topic is a rather sensitive one since the rights of Saudi Arabian women may be called non-existent by other nations. In a Kingdom where females make up most of the country’s graduates and are bigger in number compared to the men, women in Saudi Arabia do not enjoy the same freedom as other women from different parts of the globe.
Women in Saudi Arabia cannot choose which subject they want to study. In fact, it even goes as far as not letting them study engineering or law. Even in modern times, Saudi Arabian women are still not allowed to vote even if suffrage is already old news to democratic countries. Women in this Western Asian nation cannot drive and cannot travel without the approval of their male guardian or their husband. Women cannot even work in government agencies even if they are qualified. What usually disqualifies them is their womanhood.
Women in this country are required to wear “abayas”, these are like burqas worn by women in Iraq and other Moslem countries. Sadly, this garb has gotten the attention of many international feminist groups. This however, according to the women in Saudi Arabia, is not an issue. Their clothing is not an issue, the only issue is how their opportunities and their rights are being blocked because of politics and religion.
