Indigenous Plant Species Of Saudi Arabia

The biodiversity of Saudi Arabia is home to more than 3,500 rare species of plants that are rapidly depleting. Most of land here is under the effect of over grazing by cattle, and a lot of herbs and plants are severely degraded.

The ground water levels are falling because of the dominance of certain species of plants like the alfa alfa and Rhodes grass. Indigenous grass species respond to even less level of water and adapt to the local environment.

Saudi Arabia is home to several flowering plants, fruit bearing trees and other variety of seeding plants. The Saudi Arabian emblem itself carries a palm tree, so it can be called the indigenous plant of the country. The lack of soil and water does not promote any flower growth. However, there are several indigenous plants that grow in the desert and actually turn the desert into a flower bed over night.

Some of them are garlic flower, lavenders, corn flower, roses, daisies, borage, mint flowers, iris, and sunflowers. Acacia and ghaf are considered local by the tribes. It is not a surprise that the desert grows such amazing flowers. Actually the seeds are sitting right there underneath the sand as the hibernating and migrating birds leave them. Then, when the soil turns fertile or there is availability of moisture, the seeds sprout and suddenly the plants are flowering. The lack of soil and water actually does not promote natural growth of any plant. However, these plants and flowers are considered as local and indigenous because they are able to grow on desert sand.
