Saudi Arabia was coined a country that has one of the most archaic laws and rules in the Middle East. At least this was the case until recently when the government pulled their socks up. |
Life for men and women can be quite miserable because of the Islamic and Sharia laws followed in Saudi Arabia. Even children are not spared of some ridiculous customs which can be bloody and gory.
Beheadings are a part of normal life in Saudi Arabia. They are carried out publicly, while the crowd is cheering and chanting during the event. A person who has wronged will face the beheading and the crowd will shout at him to ask for forgiveness.
The person who is to be beheaded is brought to an arena. A doctor examines him physically and gives him a sedative. A government official reads out his charges and the crimes he is being beheaded for. The prisoner is allowed to recite verses from the Quran.
The executioner then holds the blade or sword, which is about 4 inches of metal, and places it on the neck of the prisoner. One swift move with it and the prisoner is beheaded. The fate of this prisoner entirely depends on the family he is asking for forgiveness. If they forgive him, then his life is spared. It also depends on the crowd that is cheering mainly and their reaction. Sometimes, they hunger for blood and sometimes forgiveness.
Mostly men are beheaded in this ritual, and if it is a woman, she is shot. Beheading is a severe punishment and a person earns it if he or she has murdered someone else, or partakes in offenses like drug dealing. Statistics show that between 2000 and 2002, 43 executions were carried out, and 33 of them on Saudis. Two women were executed, one Saudi and one Indonesian. All the executions were for murder.
