The version of Arabic spoken in Kuwait is called Gulf Arabic This kind of Arabic is also spoken in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and parts of Oman. Gulf Arabic has some distinctive features. For instance, “k” is pronounced as “ch” and “q” as “g”. In some cases, “j” is pronounced as “y”. The dialect of Gulf Arabic used in Kuwait is called Kuwaiti Arabic or Kuwait Hadari Arabic. It is very similar to the Arabic used in Iraq. The spelling and pronunciation of both these kinds of Arabic are quite similar.
Arabic is taught in schools and the locals are very fluent in their language. While Arabic is the official language of Kuwait, English is also equally important here. The majority of the population in Kuwait is expatriates belonging to countries like India, Pakistan, Iran, other Gulf countries and even the UK and U.S. English is the common medium of communication between these people and the locals. English is taught in schools and most of the locals are quite fluent in this language.
English is the language used for communication in businesses. There are both Arabic and English television and radio broadcasts in Kuwait. You can also find English and Arabic newspapers and magazines. Besides English and Arabic, other languages popularly spoken in Kuwait include Hindi, Farsi, Urdu and so on.
