Why Is The Gaza Strip Important To Israel ?

If a situation were to arise where Israel had to agree to a two-state nation, they will have to return regions occupied by it during the 1967 war.

Israel might have to relinquish rights over territories it won in the 1967 war, if it were to agree to a two-nation theory. Going by the Geneva Accord suggestions, it might have to return 98% of the areas it occupied in 1967. Israel considers Gaza to be very important primarily because it sees the Strip to be strategic to its security. Hamas does not recognize Israel and directs all its energy towards fighting and denying Israel its right to exist.

For Israel occupying Gaza, it can reduce its 45 miles of hostile borders to eight. The Strip in its form leaves a lot of room for Arab terrorism and subversion. The Israeli military, therefore, strives to retain control over the Strip. The Israelis very well understand the strategic importance keeping in view what the Allies had to sacrifice during World War II to gain control of the beachhead Anzio – over 35,000 dead.

Israel hopes that by eliminating the Hamas, it would be better placed to negotiate in the United Nations.

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are growing exponentially and it might lead to a huge refugee issue for Israel if it were to vacate the Gaza. Add to this the religious right over Jerusalem which houses some of the world’s Abrahamic religions. It will make it impossible to agree to a two-nation theory.

Water would be another area which will put the Israel’s in a quandary should they agree to a two-nation state. The water will have to be divided between the two states equitably which will hurt Israel.
