Right from the 13th century B.C. when the Philistines captured the Gaza Strip, it had been ruled by many different hands for around 2000 years. |
The Assyrians, Egyptians, Babylonians and Persians and Greeks in that order reigned over the region. In 1517, The Ottoman Empire took control of the area from the Romans and ruled the area till 1799. In 1832 the Greeks captured the land. However, the Ottomans recaptured the region and until the British control of the region.
Till 1948, the British had control over the region. In 1949, Israel declared its independence. During this period the region remained under the control of Egypt. The Israelis did not stick to the promise of autonomy for the occupied land till 1987, the Palestinian uprising Intifida plunged the land into political turmoil. The Gulf War aggravated the issue.
In 2005, the Israeli administration unilaterally withdrew from the occupied positions. This plunged the Strip into anarchy and it threatened to blow out of control.
The Hamas ousted the Al Fatah and formed its government in Palestine. The government was dissolved by the Palestine President and a new government without Hamas' participation was formed. The world is divided over support to the government of Palestine while Hamas continues to control over the Gaza Strip.
The present scenario in the Gaza Strip is dangerously volatile. The Israeli establishment, in a bid to exterminate Hamas, is pushing aggressively into the areas it had vacated while Hamas tries to establish inflict maximum losses to Israel.
