There are many variations of the dialectal Arabic.It differs from country to country. However, classical Arabic has remained unchanged for centuries. It is the language of the Qur’an. Modern Standard Arabic is derived from Classical Arabic and is the most widely used form of written Arabic. In Bahrain, Modern Standard Arabic is used in schools and for written and official communication. The people of Bahrain speak different Arabic dialects. The Bahraini Arabic dialect is spoken by the people of Manama and nearby villages. This dialect has its own unique features. For instance, the “q” in standard Arabic is pronounced as “g” and “k” as “ch” in some cases. In other parts of Bahrain, people speak the Gulf dialect. This is a form of Arabic which is widely spoken in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and so on. English is also widely spoken in Bahrain.
The population here consists of a mix of Bahraini and non Bahraini people. The non-Bahrainis include people from India, Philippines, Iran, Pakistan and so on. Languages like Farsi, Urdu, Hindi etc are widely spoken among the non-Bahrainis. English is the common medium of communication among the mixed population here. As a matter of fact, English is the main language for business and communication. It is also taught as compulsory second language in schools. Television and radio broadcasts in Bahrain are mainly in Arabic. There are several Arabic newspapers and magazines too. One can also find newspapers and magazines in English and other languages.
