Manama is the capital city of Bahrain. It is also the largest city in Bahrain. Manama is located n the far north-eastern part of Bahrain. |
Although the name Manama in Arabic means “sleepy place”, it does not do justice to this city.In fact, Manama has the city’s best nightlife, shopping centers and tourist attractions. This city is the center of economy, tourism, education and government in Bahrain. Manama was once occupied by Portugal. It was later conquered by the Persians and was then a part of the Al-Khalifa dynasty. It was declared as the capital of Bahrain in 1971. The climate in Manama, like that of the rest of Bahrain is extreme with very hot summers and cold winters.
The economy of Manama thrives on petroleum, pearl diving, fishing, heavy industry, banking, finance and tourism. There are many educational institutions in Manama. Ahlia Univeristy, AMA International University, Arab Open University ,Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance, Delmon University , New York Institute of Technology are some of the popular institutes here. There is no airport in Manama. It is catered to by the Bahrain International Airport at Al Muharraq. The roads in Manama are well maintained and there are causeways which connects islands like Muharraq Island and Sitra to this city. Toursit attractions in Manama include The National Museum which showcases the history of Bahrain from the Stone Age onwards, the Al Faith Mosque, Bait Al Quran where you can see Koranic verses written on grains of rice, the Oil Museum, the Heritage Center, the Bab al Bahrain or Gateway to Bahrain, Pearl Monument and Mina Manama which is a dhow port where visitors can see the boats being built. The gold and handcraft souk (marketplace) is also a must visit.
