The majority of the population in Bahrain is Muslims but people of other religions are free to observe their religious practices and ways of worship. The weekend here is observed on Thursdays and Fridays. Muslims here pray five times a day and fast during Ramadan. Although non-Muslims are not expected to fast during the month of Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during this season is thought to be inconsiderate. In the month of Ramadan, there are bound to be some changes in work and school timings as well as business hours. Local women here dress according to Arab religious customs. They must wear the abaya, an ankle length garment with long sleeves and a high neckline. Some women even cover their face and hands. Men wear a thobe, a long loose ankle length garment made of cotton. They complete their outfit with a traditional guthra, which is a red and white checkered cloth held in place with a black rope. Family relationships are of utmost importance here. Marriages are usually arranged by families and weddings are grand events. Boys and girls are raised and reeducated separately according to different standards.

Like in other Gulf countries, the common greeting is Salam alaykum which means “Peace be upon you”. When a person enters a room, others in the room are expected to stand up and the person goes around shaking hands with everyone and then touches his hand to his heart in a gesture of respect and affection. Men should not initiate a handshake with a woman although it is alright for men and women to shake hands if it is initiated by a woman. Invitations to ones home and offers to tea, coffee or meals should always be accepted. To decline is considered rude. Football is a favorite sport here. Other popular sports and activities include horse racing, camel racing, falconry, hare hunting and so on. Bahraini cuisine includes plenty of fresh vegetables, herbs, rice, fish and meat. In all, the culture and lifestyle of Bahrain is warm, welcoming and appealing.
