What Is Life Like For Women In The Middle East

It is said, that people should consider themselves lucky for not being born in certain places of the world, especially women. Some countries in the Middle East are viewed in this perspective.

Women and girl children are sometimes not treated at par with men and boys in certain countries of the Middle. There are nearly 16 countries in Middle East which do not give any privileges to women. Many of these countries practice female genital circumcision, and this is performed on young girls. However, most countries follow Islam and the women have to adhere to the rules. In traditional families, women cannot socialize with men, must wear hijab and are restricted from working or stepping out of the house.

In Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, women do not have any privileges socially, politically, and economically.

In Iraq, women who dress up fashionably or in other words do not follow the dress code of the religion are judged by Islamic courts. In Afghanistan, women are stoned to death publicly for voting and standing in government elections.

In Saudi Arabia, women cannot drive a car and they have no voting rights. Girls cannot go to schools, and journalism is a banned profession here.

In Jordan, honor killing is a practice that is followed where young girls have to be killed if they bring shame to the family name. The girls might have committed silly mistakes and men are given the honor for killing them.

However, the problem is that the negative side of the Middle East is magnified, while the positive side is less spoken about. Morocco came up with a new family law where women can keep their children in case of a divorce. In Saudi Arabia, women are now being allowed to participate in the Chamber of Commerce. In the recent elections of Afghanistan, women held 20 percent of the seats. As we can see, there is a gradual progress in Middle East and women are finally getting the treatment they ought to.
