The First World War brought different results for different countries. However, one country which was severely impacted by the war was Germany. It was the center of gravity during the world war. The worst situation facing Germany was that the armies made its people believe that the country was winning throughout the war. |
There was a lot of government propaganda about Germany winning the war. Even Adolph Hitler, who was a soldier during that time, believed that Germany was building strong military alliances.
Only the top leaders of Germany knew what was going in Germany really. By 1918, Germany had lost most of her efficient officers in battle. The British Navy was blocking most of Germany’s ports, and this led to mass and severe food shortage in Germany. Whatever food was available was being sent to the soldiers, leaving the ordinary people with nothing to eat. This led to a starvation-like situation. To add to the problems, the German troops were poorly equipped to handle the war. Also, other countries were forming allies to attack Germany, and the country was in no position to take these attacks. Germany could hardly believe that they lost and the military blamed the politicians for it.
This is when the Weimar Republic came into existence and people under a democratic government started their own effort in fighting the starvation and the low status of the country. At that time, the democrats were the leading party in Germany and they pleaded with Kaiser to save Germany from the crestfallen situation. However, later within a few days Kaiser was denounced and he was forced to abdicate the throne, and subsequently he fled. After that, the Weimar Republic was announced successful under the democratic rule.
