Munich is the capital of the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. The urban part of the city is located on the foothills of the Alps. Munich is most commonly associated with Oktoberfest, an annual beer celebration. However, there is a lot more to the city than the beer, which is definitely superb and delicious. |
The culture and architecture is amazing in the city. There are many museums across the city which are considered to be even better than those in Berlin. Remember, during the Second World War, Munich was heavily shelled by the allied forces. However, the people and the state government worked together to rebuilt nearly all the historical buildings. The city center even today looks like what it did in the 1800s.
There are many things to do in Munich and its vicinity. As mentioned earlier, you can visit museums, opera, take part in Oktoberfest, walk in the numerous gardens and parks, or visit the numerous castles and palaces for their baroque architecture.
In the vicinity of Munich, you can plan day trips or spend some time in the mountains. Dachau and Stamberg are ideal for day trips. In Dachau, you can visit the concentration camp and then go to Stamberg to see a lake where King Ludwig II drowned under mysterious circumstances along with his psychiatrist.
You also have the option of going to Andechs Mountain where you can visit the Andechs Monastery. You can either hike up the hills or take a bus. After that you can drink some excellent beer in the beer garden.
Salzburg in Austria is also in the vicinity of Munich. You plan a day trip to this city. It hardly takes one and half hour by train.
Fussen is easily accessible by train and the trip takes around two hours. Fussen is situation at the base of the Alps in southern Bavaria. This town is famous for King Ludwig II's so-called Fairy Tale Castle, officially known as Neuschwanstein.
If you want to relax, you can visit Bad Reichenhall, a spa town close to Munich.
