Usuki is a city in Japan located in the Oita Prefecture. Prefectures are places or cities that have been designed entirely. Usuki was a prehistoric city that was controlled by the Samurais at one point under the regime of Lord Sorin Otomo in the 16th century. The remains from the empire are still found in the city and are part of a national historic site. |
The Usuki Castle, that is located in the south west region of the city, is a popular attraction for tourists. The streets that were lined with stone walls painted in white are still found here in perfect state. The Nioza Historical Street is a stone pavement and was made 400 years ago. The remains of a Dutch ship on the shores of Usuki form a major attraction.
The Usuki Sekibutsu is a village that has many natural Buddha carvings made out of stone. The main Buddha image is found in the mountains, which is located about 4 kilometers away from the downtown. There are more than 60 natural carvings here. Some of the Buddha images, as per historians, could have been those carved in 12th or 14th century. They have been divided into Heian period or Kamakura period.
In autumn every year, a bamboo festival is held in the city of Usuki. About five thousand lamps made out of bamboo are lit to mark the festival. Several tourists come here during that time. Usuki is also considered to be a religious site, and several tourists reveal that they had a spiritual experience while visiting the city.
