The nuclear bomb, Little Man, was dropped on the coastal city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. It produced devastating results, and the effects lasted for years to come. First of all, the bomb generated intense heat enough to incinerate the entire city. |
Thousands of people who were outdoors were immediately vaporized due to the intense heat. Others lost their limbs, eye sight, and some received severe burns on their body. After the blast, people who were disabled just lay on the ground for flies to eat them away. Everyone, including women and children, were killed in the blast. The blast survivors had even more difficulties coping with their lives later, but they did not live long. Before the blast in Hiroshima, there were nearly 76000 buildings of which only 6000 were left after the blast.
Nearly hundred thousand people died on the spot, while another 40 thousand died a couple of days later due to complications from the blast. However, in today’s technological terms, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima is actually of a smaller magnitude.
Today’s weapons are capable of much more wide scale destruction. However, no one should forget how Hiroshima was raised to the ground. The destruction left Japan handicapped for many years even after the surrender. Crops were not growing in the otherwise fertile Hiroshima. Due to the blast several, animals in the sea also died. Babies that were born in the city were deformed, and had several mental and cognition problems. The effects of radioactive material were seen for a long time.
