Karoo is a semi desert type of area in South Africa. Karoo is divided into Little Karoo and Greater Karoo. This particular area has a lot of prominence in Africa because evidence from ice age and paleontology hase been found here. This is where the first evidence of ice age was found. |
Realizing its importance, the entire region was declared as a National Park in 1979 and today, it is a heritage site. Because of its semi desert type of environment, it is isolated. There are several desert reptiles, mammals and birds that live here. Some of them are tortoise, black rhino, rabbit and the black eagle.
Also unique is the discovery of fossils in the National Park. Most fossils belong to the Mesozoic Era. What is weird also is the existence of underground water sources in the Park. These are referred to as underground fountains, but there are not really fountains. The underground water is just present there and if someone digs, the hole will spring up like water. Water has been trapped underground, and in places called hippopotamus holes.
The first suspicion came when people noticed diverse flowers and vibrant plants starting to grow in the semi desert kind of environment. These underground water fountains make it possible for the diverse plants and vegetation to grow. It is possible that the semi desert kind of land if cultivated and crops could be grown. The sources of underwater water in the Karoo are still unclear. The reason could be something old, prior to the ice age or pre historic times.
