Loss Of Tribal Land Kruger National Park

Loss of tribal land has been a controversy ever since the boundaries of the Kruger National Park were defined. Several local tribes have lost their farming land to the park as per claims. It has become a war between the tribes, developers and the government for the land.

Government has allowed development of wildlife estates on the tribal land. Because the tribes are now fighting back, the government has put a hold on the development of these estates.

The proposed wild life resorts were offered 14 thousand hectares of land which was overlooking the bushveld. Nearly 156 stands were to be set up here to watch game. These areas were high ground and ideal spot for wildlife watching. There have been several claims from the local tribes on the allotted land ever since the project started.

The local tribes have an unfriendly attitude towards tourists. They hold the tourists responsible for their land being snatched. However, the government denies that they snatched the land and have always claimed that the land belonged to the government.

The tribes were living their and were cultivating small crops for their own consumption. However, local tribes are not educated or accustomed to rules. The particular tribes that live in Kruger National Park are somewhat migratory and they settle wherever they see arable land. It is very difficult to reason with them about the development project and describing the positive side of it. It is also not possible to compensate them with any other land as a lot of cultural aspects revolve around the specific piece of land.
