Unemployed Ghanaian youth pack and sell such food items as fresh fruits as well as non food items as electronics and toilet papers into cartons and sell them to passers-by or drivers while in traffic jams.

Hawking on the streets of Ghana is considered an annoying nuisance. The hawkers risk being hit by vehicles on the road as they sell their goods. The hawkers also obstruct traffic. Motorists are unable to keep driving with the hawkers on the road. Accordingly, the hawkers are seen to be a major cause of the endemic traffic jams on the roads of Accra. They flock roads forcing motorists to use alternative routes which may be longer. As a result, the motorists end up wasting time and expensive petrol in the process.

Instead of the number of hawkers on the stress reducing as the years go by, the opposite is true. This is attributed to the culture of impunity. Policemen, who are charged with the duty of keeping the streets clear of the hawkers, have decided to turn a blind eye. In other instances they flout laid down rules and instead accept bribes from the hawkers and allow them to operating.

The only way that the Ghanaian government can effectively deal with the problem of street hawking is by creating jobs for the youth.
