The people of Ghana are said to originate from several major tribes. These include Ashanti, Ewe, Mole-Dagbani, Gurma, Guan and Ga-Adangbe. The largest tribe in Ghana is formed by the Ashanti. Unlike other tribes in the country it is matrilineal. That is, the people trace their origin to a dominant female as opposed to male. |
In ancient Ghana, the Ashanti were famous for their wealth and splendor. However, today they are famous for their crafts, more so their fertility dolls, kente cloths which are very colorful and their stools which are hand carved. They are also involved in weaving and metal work.
Ewe is another tribe in Ghana. They reside in the south eastern part of Ghana. Unlike the Ashanti, the Ewe are mostly livestock farmers. Still, there are some Ewe tribesmen who are involved in the making of crafts.
The people of the Gaun tribe are said to have migrated from the Mossi region of what is today Burkina Faso. They first settled on the Black Volta. Later they moved southwards and settled on the plains in the coastal area.
The Ga-Adangbe tribe, on the other hand, mainly reside on the plains located in Accra. The tribe is a combination of two language groups, the Ga and the Adangbe. The Adangbe group consists of such groups as the Ada, Krobo, Kpone, Ningo, Shai and La all of whom speak distinct dialects. The Ga group on its part consists of the Ga-Mashie people who occupy central Ghana and the Ga speakers who are said to have migrated from Togo.
