Ethiopia has never been colonized. It was only occupied for five years and this occupation was never been called as colonization. When did Ethiopia gain independence from Italy’s rule? |
Ethiopia has been struggling any invasion ever since. Its forefathers have been fighting for its independence. In 1523, Ethiopia defeated the Muslim invasion. The intrusion of Egypt and Sudan in 1850’s increased the empire in Ethiopia. Italy tried to invade this country in 1896 but again Ethiopia fought against it. The Italians were able to occupy this country in 1936 and lasted for five years. And finally, it gained its independence in the year of 1941from Italy. When the Mussolini’s group was ousted, Haile Selassie was able to restore Ethiopia’s independence. They fought against the Italian army led by Major Orde Wingate.
When Italy occupied Ethiopia led by General Pietro Badoglio in 1936, Mussolini declared this country as part of the Italian empire. During the Italian occupation, Emperor Haile Selassie exiled himself and found refuge in Britain. He returned to his own country during the World War II. In June 30, 1936, he appealed to the League of Nations and got the support from the two great allies which are the United Nations and Russia. Although France and Great Britain still supported Italy, the Emperor fought hard to overthrow the Italian occupation. Until finally, they were able to get back Ethiopia’s independence in 1941, gaining its independence from the invasion of Italy made a very significant effect where it changed the outlook of the Europeans towards the African continent.
