Ethiopia is the oldest country located in the continent of Africa. It is an independent country that has never been colonized again by other countries after the occupation of Italy by Mussolini for five years. There are 86 vernaculars or languages used in the country. |
The country consists of different ethnic groups but the most dominant is the Oromo, next is the Amhara tribe, followed by the Tigreans.
Ethiopian culture varies with the different ethnic groups that can be found in this country. But the most important custom practiced in Ethiopia is respect to older people. They always make sure that they give their respect to their elders even if they are only one year elder from them. They greet among themselves by kissing on the cheeks. Younger people should always give her/his seat to elder people. During meal if a guest is present, the guest should be the one to begin or start eating. Throughout the duration of the meal, everybody must take part in the conversation. Not joining in the discussion and concentrating on the meal is treated and considered as being impolite. They do not eat the food prohibited in the Old Testament. Every time they kill animals for their meat, they twist its head towards the east. If the butcher is a Christian, the throat of the animal is sliced “In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost” and if he is a Muslim, “In the name of Allah the Merciful.” Ethiopia is rich in customs and traditions. It has a versatile culture of the different ethnic groups living in this country.
