Ancient Egypt Geography

The geography of Egypt has not gained a lot of interest from researchers. However, it is interesting and historical. Egypt was a vast land that had two sea shores. There was the red sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Egyptians believed that, Egypt was divided into two areas or portions. These areas were part of the Egypt as a kingdom.

These areas were described as types of Egypt due to their nature, culture and people. There was the black Egypt or the black land and the red Egypt.

The black land or black Egypt was the expanse that lay along the Nile River which originates from east Africa. This area was rich, fertile and productive. It was described as bread basket of Egypt. The black lands of Egypt were fertile since the Nile River deposited silt. The black Egypt was expansive and lay along the length of river Nile. The silt formed a thick layer of fertile soil. This land was the only area in Egypt where agriculture could be practiced. The farming activities here produced enough produce to feed Egyptians.

The red Egypt or the red lands were the expansive deserts that surrounded Egypt on both sides. This was barren land composed of sand and desert. Ancient mining activities were carried out. Egyptians were able to mine precious metals from the red lands. They also could mine semi precious stones here. This land protected Egypt from invading armies. This ancient Egypt geography provides an insight about how Egypt was functioning and where human economic activity took place in ancient Egypt geography.
