The name ‘Algeria’ came from Al Jazain, meaning Arabic for "the Islands”. Algeria is the second largest country in Africa and is bordered by Morocco and Western Sahara in the north and by Tunisia and Libya in the east, with 1,250km of coastline. The four-fifths of its area is covered by the desert Sahara. |
Eighty five percent of Algerians live along the bay area of Mediterranean coastlands. Along these coastal lands are the main towns and resorts. The natural resources like oil and minerals have created new economic centers like Hassi Messaoud, The Head of State is President Abdelaziz Bouteflika since 1999. The form of government in Algeria is republic. The language mostly spoken is Arabic and French and the literacy rate is 65%. There is a compulsory schooling in Algeria for 9 years.
Algeria is rich in natural resources like oil, petroleum, natural gas and non-fuel minerals. The Arab-Berber people are 99 percent of the population, Europeans very less. Earlier, Algeria was under French constitutional rule. Algeria got independence in 1962.
